THE HIGHFIELD HOTEL
The History of The Highfield Hotel
The Highfield as it's now called has had a varied history. Formerly a private home, in the 1950’s it became the Moorland Country Club; in the 1960’s it changed its name to the Baron, then in the 1970’s a hotel was built and the name changed to the Baron of Beef. Since the 1970’s it's been known as the Idler, the Sporting Lodge and The Balloon and Basket until finally we arrive in the 21st century with The Highfield.
Locals Paul and Deirdre Jennings, the owners of Jennings Computers Idle, Bradford (established in 1979) bought the newly named Highfield, just before Christmas 2009.
The property had been empty since around September 2008 when the previous owners abandoned their Bradford premises to concentrate on two other (larger) hotels in Leigh and Middlesbrough. The property was left in a poor state of repair, and work started in January 2010.
The doors of the brand new Highfield pub finally opened to the public on Friday 28 May 2010, just in time for the Bank Holiday – and the World Cup (with plenty of screens to catch the action, including England's defeat by Germany, unfortunately).
The pub has seen some busy afternoons and evenings since opening, and we have been glad to find that people are happy to see the pub re-open. There has been a really good mix of people coming through the doors, and we hope this will continue. There has already been lots of demand for the function room and hotel, and we hope the restaurant, gym and swimming pool will also be popular once they are opened. Conference and wedding facilities and accommodation in our good sized bedrooms are now available at the hotel, and the pool and spa will also soon be available.
Work is continuing on the restaurant, and the pool, Jacuzzi, sauna & steam rooms and gym. Watch this space for more details!
The pub is a free house, so we can do whatever will please the customers – any requests and suggestions would be welcomed! And we’re not part of a chain so we can be very flexible with weddings, conferences and other events at the hotel. Just call us and we’ll do our best to help you.
The aim of the Highfield pub is to be a place where people of all ages – children are welcome – can come for a drink, to relax & chat or maybe enjoy one of the live bands that will be playing. There are two separate parts to the pub – the larger, livelier room with a stage and pool table, and a smaller, quieter room for those who just want a quiet drink and a chat with friends. In addition, for the warmer weather there is a large paved area (with some cover, and heaters in the colder months) plus a grassed area with plenty of seating which is ideal for socialising with friends, family or colleagues during those warm summer months (and there's a cosy interior for when the weather isn't so good). There is also a large car park for customers.
The Highfield pub opens its doors all day, every day from noon till eleven (or midnight on Friday & Saturday). You can simply sit back and enjoy a drink from our excellent selection of wines, beers, lagers & ciders, etc as well as an array of spirits and liqueurs to take your pick from. We also have a variety of drinks for children, as families are always welcome at The Highfield. We also cater for children’s parties in the pub or the function room. If you would like to hold any kind of function at the pub or in the function room, or would like to book a room in the hotel, contact our team (click here to e-mail us) and we can discuss your requirements.
We have a quiz every Tuesday night, with a free supper, and plenty of live bands on Friday & Saturday nights throughout the year. Other plans for the pub for the future are: barbecues and family fun days – and perhaps even a Highfield Festival with live music (click here to view our events page).
The Highfield Hotel was a well known venue, popular for weddings and other functions – and we hope to restore it to its former glory. In 1974, the legendary Johan Cruyff stayed at the hotel (the Baron of Beef as it was then), as it was close to Dennyfield, Thackley’s ground, where his Barcelona team trained before the match with Leeds in the European Cup Semi Final. (If you have any more information about the history of the site, or any old photos you’d like to share with us, we would love to hear from you.)
Quality and value for money are the main ingredients in everything we do at The Highfield Hotel. So whether you wish to celebrate family events, book a stay with us, sample our delicious food or simply have a drink amongst friends or colleagues, you will be assured of a warm welcome and friendly atmosphere at The Highfield Hotel. We look forward to seeing you soon.
